It is said that, Freddy Heineken, grandson of the founder, proposed the 'laughing e' to make the logo less formal. The logo is later turned into a typeface that is used as their corporate typeface. Earik Wiersma & Lucas de Groot made the font, called Heineken Sans and Heineken Serif.
